Our Ethos and Legacy
Pagoda Arts is built on a foundation of openness, mentorship, and cultural exchange. Our work is guided by a shared belief that cultural knowledge should be passed on generously to anyone who shows a genuine interest in Chinese arts and traditions.
In China during the 1970s and 1980s, both Mr and Mrs Li were entrusted with students formally assigned to study under them, learning not only technical skills but also artistic discipline and cultural philosophy. Many of Mr Li’s students later became professional musicians, music directors, and arts leaders, including individuals now holding senior cultural roles in Guangdong Province.
After settling in Liverpool in the early 1980s, Mr and Mrs Li continued this tradition of open teaching, offering instruction in music, tai chi, dance, calligraphy, Chinese opera, and folk arts to people of all ages and backgrounds. Their philosophy remains central to Pagoda Arts:
“Everyone is welcome. If you show interest, we will do our best to share what we know.”
Today, this legacy continues through a new generation of cultural educators and emerging artists, many of whom began their journey in the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra. Former members have gone on to become Education Officers, Choir Masters, and Workshop Leaders, contributing to arts education and outreach across communities.
One such example is Tian Qiyi, a music duo formed by orchestra alumni, whose work blends traditional Chinese instrumentation with contemporary influences, reflecting Pagoda Arts’ commitment to honouring heritage while embracing innovation.
Our team today brings together experienced cultural specialists, dedicated youth mentors, and artists-in-training supported through our Emerging Young Artist Programme. Together, we work to ensure Pagoda Arts remains a vibrant, inclusive space for creativity, tradition, and cross-cultural understanding.
