  • Red decorations – People will stick different red decorations in the house to add to the festival atmosphere. The decorations include paper cutting, pictures of the Door Deities, Chinese New Year couplets and new year pictures

Worship the Gods and ancestors- Ancestor worship on New Year’s Eve is one of the more important customs for Chinese New Year, it’s a tradition to show respect to the ancestors in all festivals as Chinese Culture likes to respect and remember where we came from.

  • Chinese New Year eve dinner – It is one of the most important meal of the year, people who left home to different cities will come back home and have dinner together with the family. Traditionally dinner will be eaten after worshiping the ancestors

  • Red money envelops – After dinner, parents and grandparents will give lucky red money envelopes to the children, some parents will put it underneath their children’s pillows whilst they are sleep. They believe that the envelops can keep the evil spirits away from the children

  • Staying up – On Chinese New Year Eve, every room in the house will have the light on through the night, everyone will try to stay up all night, families will stay in a room and chat. This symbolises keeping all illness and bad things away and hoping the best for new year
