This February, Pagoda Arts invites you to celebrate Chinese New Year with a vibrant programme of live music, performance, hands-on workshops and family-friendly activity at Liverpool’s Chinese cultural centre.

Across open days, concerts, family events and celebratory performances, the programme offers different ways to engage through music, movement and making — whether you want to watch, listen, take part or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

12 February — Open Day

A chance to experience the everyday artistic life of Pagoda Arts.

Tai Chi Class (10:30am–12:00pm)

Observe a traditional Tai Chi session exploring balance, breath and meditative movement.

Chinese Dance Class (1:30pm–3:00pm)

Watch Chinese dance training, showcasing expressive movement, rhythm and cultural storytelling.

15 February — Tian Qiyi featuring Jah Wobble

A high-energy live concert blending Chinese instruments with dub and post-punk sounds.

Venue: Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Returning to Liverpool in the Year of the Horse, Tian Qiyi perform with Jah Wobble, blending Chinese traditional instruments with dub bass and post-punk energy — a sound rooted in Liverpool’s 2008 Capital of Culture legacy.

20 February — Family Fun Day

A welcoming day of participatory cultural activity designed for families and young people.

Arts & Craft Workshops (10:30am–11:30am)

Artist-led activities include:

Making traditional Horse Lanterns inspired by the Year of the Horse Learning the intricate art of Chinese paper-cutting Enjoying a selection of traditional Chinese snacks in a relaxed, family-friendly setting

Live Music Performance (1:30pm–2:30pm)

An afternoon music performance with musicians from the Hong Kong Plucking String Orchestra, visiting from Hong Kong, introducing audiences to the sounds and textures of Chinese plucked-string music. Presented in a relaxed and accessible setting, the performance highlights the expressive qualities of instruments such as the pipa and guzheng and is welcoming for family audiences. Appearing alongside the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra, the performance reflects Pagoda Arts’ commitment to artistic collaboration and international cultural exchange.

Chinese Music Workshop (4:30pm–5:30pm)

A participatory workshop led by professional musicians, inviting participants to have a go on a range of traditional Chinese musical instruments. The session introduces basic playing techniques alongside accessible insight into Chinese music history and contemporary musical fusion, exploring how traditional forms continue to evolve within modern practice. Suitable for families, young people and first-time learners.

22 February — The Fire Horse Gala (1:30pm–3:00pm)

The programme concludes with The Fire Horse Gala, a celebratory performance event showcasing Chinese performing arts.

The gala features:

Expressive Chinese dance Meditative and dynamic Tai Chi performances A concert by the award-winning Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra, whose repertoire draws on traditional Chinese music while engaging with contemporary and cross-cultural influences
